Two new articles courtesy of Balancing-Act show the benefits of biogas for isolated communities. The importance of power sources for ICT initiatives is often not considered. With creative usage of other sources of electricity, the potential penetration of ICT could become deeper. Another interesting article is that on e-commerce for development. The e-commerce phenomenon has unquestionably been oversold to communities, indicating that it takes nothing more than a computer and an internet connection to sell/buy goods online. This relates to a news article about the growth in retail websites in South Africa and the lack of corresponding sales growth (www.cinsa.info/portal/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=319&Itemid=2 ). So you get less business and a greater market. How do we as a development community respond to this? In anybody has any ideas, or knows of any initiatives in this area for SADC, please email sadc-idiscussion@lists.sn.apc.org ************** JOIN CINSA ----------------- CINSA would like to invite Community ICTs to join us, free of charge to access all the benefits of belonging to CINSA. To join, email ngunga@sangonet.org.za *************** NEW ADDITIONS TO THE CINSA PORTAL: Advocacy ------------------ Restrictions on VoIP and WiFi harmful to South Africa? Written by Ewan McPhie, Bridges.org 25 May 2004 - Given the current media swirl in the US relating to the FCC decisions on Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) issue in Africa, bridges.org in collaboration with the East and Southern Africa Centre for International ICT Policy (ESA-CIP) have written the following short commentary that looks at the benefits of the technology in relation to the developing world, with a special emphasis to South Africa as an ICT policy leader for the continent. http://www.cinsa.info/portal/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=301&Itemi d=104 For more Advocacy articles go to: http://www.cinsa.info/portal/index.php?option=content&task=category§ioni d=2&id=8&Itemid=104 Research pieces ------------------- E-commerce for development is over-hyped Promotion of e-readiness is all the rage. Internet-based business to business (B2B) applications are promoted as tools to enable producer firms in developing countries to reduce costs and enter global markets. However, evidence is emerging that policy makers and development agencies are too optimistic about the poverty-busting potential of information and communication technologies (ICTs). http://www.cinsa.info/portal/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=302&Itemi d=102 For more new additions, please go to http://www.cinsa.info/portal/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=271&Itemi d=106 Projects and experiences --------------------- Solar or biogas? Lessons from rural Tanzania There is no electricity available to 99% of the people in the area, so both computer centers required unique power generation capabilities. Long-term sustainability was the main objective; a power supply that could not be afforded or maintained by local means was impossible. For more new additions, please go to http://cinsa.info/portal/index.php?option=articles&task=viewarticle&artid=13 5&Itemid=64 ---------- OTHER QUALITY INFORMATION CINSA collects specific community ICT news from a number of sources and places it on the portal for your convenience. We have also added a new section that you may wish to contribute to: Projects and experiences. Here YOU can share your successes and mistakes for the benefit of others. We will soon be profiling member information in one of the pages on the portal. So please if you are a member of CINSA (or aspires to become one) kindly send us your updated information about your community project for publishing. **************** Upcoming ICT events: --------------- Fourth Provincial Thetha - Northern Cape Province Participants will be introduced to various inputs from government, business and the CSO sector, highlighting various ICT policy and development issues.
