EDITORIAL

----------------

Dear=20 subscribers,

It has=20 been quite sometime now since you last saw this newsletter. We have had = some=20 technical glitches that meant we had to re-do it several times. We have = put in=20 place measures to prevent future mishaps.

Well,=20 that calls for an update on CINSA as a network. This editorial therefore = briefly=20 outlines the activities undertaken by CINSA and some of its plans for = the=20 future.

CINSA=20 operates on the premise of being a =93network of networks=94 to = facilitate the=20 sharing of information and resources. To this end we have established = two nodal=20 points in Zambia and Tanzania and the aim is to have these nodal points=20 replicated in each SADC country.

In July=20 2003 CINSA launched a needs assessment of community ICT initiatives in = 11 SADC=20 countries. Valuable insights were gained through the exercise - a report = can be=20 downloaded at http://www.cinsa.info/portal/index.php?option=3Dcontent&= amp;task=3Dview&id=3D4=20 . CINSA also has a portal that forms the information backbone of the = project.=20 The interactive, database-driven portal (http://www.cinsa.info/) currently = averages=20 4000 hits per month and has received excellent reviews. In addition to=20 information disseminated through the CINSA portal, approximately 230 = project=20 stakeholders are subscribed and networked through a CINSA listserv, = which=20 enables them to share experiences and exchange ideas. This newsletter is = one of=20 those attempts to remind visitors to the portal of what=92s new, updates = and=20 changes to the portal.

In=20 future we will be conducting a user survey to determine network services = including what our visitors/users want to be published on the portal, = this=20 newsletter and other information resources.

CINSA=20 has facilitated the access to training on basic ICT literacy, ICT policy = and=20 sustainability skills to network=92s participating organisations and has = worked=20 with grassroots organisations such as the Lubombo Community Radio Forum = to=20 establish a multimedia project from project inception to implementation. = Facilitating access to skills training and project development work will = continue to be the project=92s focus areas in = future.

Through=20 SANGONeT, CINSA will develop strategic partnerships with like-minded=20 organisations to ensure the network becomes cost-effective in the = delivery of=20 its services to communities. Through these and other partnerships CINSA = members=20 will benefit from subsidised and discounted training programmes, = technology and=20 equipment supplies, and ICT consultancy services.

Currently,=20 the network=92s secretariat is busy fundraising for the long-term = operation.=20 Another ongoing activity that is expected to feed into the fundraising = process=20 is the independent evaluation of CINSA by a consultant from Link Centre, = University of Witwatersrand South Africa. We kindly request your = cooperation=20 once contacted in this regard.

Until=20 next time, I wish you all the best in your = endeavours.

We have had some technical glitches that meant we had to re-do it several times. We have put in place measures to prevent future mishaps. Well, that calls for an update on CINSA as a network. This editorial therefore briefly outlines the activities undertaken by CINSA and some of its plans for the future. CINSA operates on the premise of being a "network of networks" to facilitate the sharing of information and resources. To this end we have established two nodal points in Zambia and Tanzania and the aim is to have these nodal points replicated in each SADC country. In July 2003 CINSA launched a needs assessment of community ICT initiatives in 11 SADC countries. Valuable insights were gained through the exercise - a report can be downloaded at http://www.cinsa.info/portal/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=4 . CINSA also has a portal that forms the information backbone of the project. The interactive, database-driven portal (http://www.cinsa.info/) currently averages 4000 hits per month and has received excellent reviews. In addition to information disseminated through the CINSA portal, approximately 230 project stakeholders are subscribed and networked through a CINSA listserv, which enables them to share experiences and exchange ideas. This newsletter is one of those attempts to remind visitors to the portal of what's new, updates and changes to the portal. In future we will be conducting a user survey to determine network services including what our visitors/users want to be published on the portal, this newsletter and other information resources. CINSA has facilitated the access to training on basic ICT literacy, ICT policy and sustainability skills to network's participating organisations and has worked with grassroots organisations such as the Lubombo Community Radio Forum to establish a multimedia project from project inception to implementation. Facilitating access to skills training and project development work will continue to be the project's focus areas in future. Through SANGONeT, CINSA will develop strategic partnerships with like-minded organisations to ensure the network becomes cost-effective in the delivery of its services to communities. Through these and other partnerships CINSA members will benefit from subsidised and discounted training programmes, technology and equipment supplies, and ICT consultancy services. Currently, the network's secretariat is busy fundraising for the long-term operation. Another ongoing activity that is expected to feed into the fundraising process is the independent evaluation of CINSA by a consultant from Link Centre, University of Witwatersrand South Africa. We kindly request your cooperation once contacted in this regard. Until next time, I wish you all the best in your endeavours.
