Market evolution is necessary for survi= val
Natalie Bryden

The South African I= T market is starting = to mirror those in fir= st world countries, wh= ere services account fo= r the largest share of th= e market.

Developing a servic= e capability is criti= cal for vendors in orde= r to ensure survival and= to improve revenues in= a commoditised market where margins are continually squeeze= d. Technology services= are services specifical= ly related to the plan= ning, implementation and on-going support of= IT platforms rather th= an other professional services such as HR= , management services= and so on.

During 2004 the fas= test growth rate in the = IT industry was experi= enced in the hardware mar= ket =96 spurred on by favourable exchange rates and refresh cycles. Although th= e PC volumes shipped gre= w by 32.7% and servers b= y 47.0%, this did not= do much for revenue th= at grew a mere 14.7% b= y comparison. For the second year running= , hardware vendors ha= d to work extremely hard= to meet their revenue targets.

The exchange rate has had a significant impact on the IT mar= ket, which is highly sensitive to imported components, especially hardware.= The rand strengthened 15% against the US dollar in 2004, from R7.56/$ to R= 6.46/$. Overall the rand has gained about 120% against the greenback since = it hit a record low of R13.85/$ late in 2001, averaging gains each year exc= ept during 2001 when it experienced a loss of about 60%.

The continued stren= gthening of the rand made imported hardware and software more affordable, g= iving buyers more freedom with their available budget. Most companies have = made use of the opportunity provided by the lower rand/dollar exchange rate= to refresh equipment, to the detriment of locally produced hardware. =

In general, the Sou= th African IT market is maturing and evolving to a services-based industry.= Services accounted for 40.9% of the revenues in 2004, software accounted f= or 19.4% of the revenues, while hardware accounted for 39.7% compared with = the 2001 revenue shares of 18.1% for IT services, 38.5% for software and 43= .4% for hardware.

It is expected that IT expenditure will move increasingly to= wards a services-based model as software and hardware products become commo= ditised and services offer the only means of differentiation for many vendo= rs.

With corporate IT b= udgets sitting at about 3% of turnover and being constantly scrutinised, co= mbined with continued consolidation in the local IT industry, the African c= ontinent has become more attractive to local players - whether as a launch = platform for local suppliers or as a support service hub for large users.&n= bsp;

In a recent survey = by BMI-T entitled, "SA Corporate IT User Trends, 2005", business issues suc= h as compliance, customer intimacy, cost control, process improvement and c= ompetitive differentiation emerged as areas of focus in the IT environment.= Voice over IP, wireless LANs and mobile data are the most relevant emergin= g technologies. The research indicated that the main driver for choosing th= ese technologies is cost savings.

Change is the price= of survival. In order to assist companies in their quest for innovation, v= endors and service providers require an understanding of both business and = IT issues. In light of this, service providers have continued with the vert= icalisation of their go-to-market strategies in order to deliver in-depth u= nderstanding and possible innovation to their client's business models.

Operator revenues from mo= bile data could reach 8.2% by 2008

Total mobile operator = data revenues will grow from R2 100 million (4.8% of revenue) in 2004 to R5= 100 million (8.2% of revenue) by 2008.

This is according to Tert= ia Smit telecoms analyst and author of a new report by BMI-TechKnowledge (B= MI-T). The report is entitled Mobile Data Applications for Financial Servic= es and Related Sectors and includes mobile operators, Wireless Application = Service Providers (WASPs) and content service providers.

"If market demand is stim= ulated at a faster rate, data may top 10% of operator revenues by 2008; thi= s excludes revenues earned by independent WASP and CSPs," says Smit.

Despite its obvious data = utility, the killer application on 3G networks will probably be voice commu= nication, with a resultant impact on network quality and dramatically reduc= ed prices of voice calls. Currently the lack of an established 3G handset i= nstalled base in South Africa is a barrier to mass-market uptake for data a= pplications - although many business and "early-adopter" individuals will b= e able to justify the cost of purchasing handsets and PC data cards.

"Business application upt= ake, particularly in financial services, generally lag the 'application pus= h' from telecoms and technology players. Mobile operators and WASPs are inc= reasingly offering m-commerce applications, threatening to leapfrog financi= al services institutions, moving into the payments and stored value arenas = in the process. Concerns about issues such as security and ROI, as well as = the existence of legacy systems, all also result in slower adoption of some= applications among the banks," adds Smit.
 Government market<= /td>

Government IT spend expected to reach R6.5 bill= ion in 2007/2008

Government IT expendit= ure could reach R6.5 billion in 2007/08 at a CAGR of 7.8%, up from R4.8 bil= lion in 2003/04, excluding parastatals.

BMI-T announced these fin= dings in the publication of its IT in Government report.

Natalie Bryden, Senior An= alyst at BMI-T, says, "The public sector IT market is seen by most vendors = as an attractive market since it is large and is characterised by extensive= projects. It is also not as influenced by international fluctuations and o= ther economic changes as the commercial sector. It is, however, a difficult= market that is strongly influenced by political decision-making."

BMI-T expects IT expendit= ure in national government to reach R3 billion in 2007/08 at a CAGR of 4.5%= , up from R2.6 billion in 2003/04. The report highlights that on a provinci= al government level, the IT market size was approximately R1.3 billion in 2= 003/04 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 11.7% to reach R2 billion by 20= 07/08. From a local government perspective, the market size reached approxi= mately R936 million in 2003/04 and will grow at a CAGR of 10.8% to reach R1= .4 billion by 2007/08.

"Standardisation recommen= dations are beginning to guide the choices that are made locally. In the ve= ndor environment, increased consolidation and increased competition for lim= ited budgets is expected to occur. Vendors would be expected to increase ov= erall product offerings to increase revenue and to demonstrate their value = add business benefits to customers," concludes Bryden.

African mobile market growth contin= ues

The African combine= d fixed and mobile market is estimated to be about 100 million subscribers.= Mobile accounts for 68% of these and is expected to grow to over 144 milli= on by 2009. Even this figure may be considered conservative with the possib= ility of 180 million being considered reasonable for that period.

Driving the mobile = services in Africa has been the need for basic voice services at a cost eff= ective level with pre-paid being the de facto billing standard, reflecting = the global phenomenon of lowering affordability barriers. This relates to d= ecisions made by network operators to reduce service charges and lower re-c= harge denominations, resulting in a corresponding decrease in marginal aver= age revenue per unit =96 thus revenue growth forecasts need not be revised = substantially.

The graph below sho= ws SA accounting for the larger portion of the mobile subscriber market, wh= ile the west African region shows the greater growth rate (25% CAGR) with t= he rising star, Nigeria, close behind at 23% CAGR.

African mobile subscriber growth in milli= ons, 2004-2009

Source: BMI-T, 20= 05

The Nigerian mobile subscriber base is expected to reach 12 = million by end of 2005, with an addressable mobile subscriber market conser= vatively estimated at between 24 and 31 million.

The demand for tele= coms services is expected to drive the combined fixed and mobile capex for = the entire continent to $61 billion for the period 2000 =96 2009, presentin= g an attractive opportunity for infrastructure and equipment vendors. =

Mobile operators ap= pear to be in a far better position to capitalise on these opportunities du= e to the enhanced coverage and lower cost of subscriber acquisition. Howeve= r, as these opportunities arise and begin to play themselves out it is high= ly likely that the African mobile market will experience some form of conso= lidation.

Fixed line operator= s, on the other hand, are currently seeking ways of using wireless technolo= gy to begin rolling out sophisticated services to subscribers.

Due to the relative= ly new or "fresh" nature of the telecoms markets across Africa, most new in= vestment is expected to go into transmission and access components of the n= etworks.

However, looking fo= rward BMI-T expects to see a significant shift of investment towards the OS= S/BSS/NSS element of the network as the networks mature and operators begin= to roll out more sophisticated services to their subscribers.

BMI-T anticipates t= hat network operators will increasingly base their investment and pricing d= ecisions on long-range incremental costing principles, as their fully depre= ciated asset bases are leveraged into the future.

 Retail and wholesale market

W. Europe=92s retail and wholesale IT spend to reach $39.6 b= illion in 2009

<= b>IT spending in the western European retail and wholesale sector is expect= ed to reach $39.6 billion in 2009, up from $33.6 billion in 2005 ($19.9 bil= lion for retail and $13.7 billion for wholesale), with a CAGR of 4.1%, acco= rding to a new IDC study.

"The retail industry is s= howing positive growth opportunities for IT vendors as the key players are = demonstrating the competitive advantage gain achievable with the implementa= tion of IT solutions aligned with their business. Innovation trends and new= technology adoption are helping to fuel the upward trend in the sector," s= aid Ivano Ortis, programme manager with IDC's EMEA vertical markets service= .

Software continues to be = the fastest-growing segment, closely followed by IT services, mainly driven= by operations and planning. IT services will remain the major driver for I= T spending, accounting for almost 50% of overall spending. Hardware is grow= ing in 2005 thanks to a strong performance in the networking area.

IT spending growth in the= retail segment is expected to outpace growth in the wholesale segment, wit= h a CAGR of 4.7% compared to 3.3% between 2005 and 2009. Retail sub-vertica= ls that will offer the best opportunities over the forecast period include = other general retail distribution and retail distribution of food, drink an= d tobacco.

Among the top western Eur= opean countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the U.K.), Spain is expe= cted to perform best both in terms of annual growth and overall CAGR, while= Italy is expected to lag in IT spending growth in the retail sector and Ge= rmany in the wholesale sector.

New analysis of Africa=92s SME IT potential

The SME sector is a rapidly growing one with potential= for considerable IT spend in the future.

This is according to BMI-= TechKnowledge=92s latest report: The SME IT End-User Trends and Market Fore= cast, which uncovers the technology trends and IT spend of the SME sector i= n SA.

"The SME sector needs IT = solutions that are easy to use, modular, cost effective and specific to the= ir business needs,=94 says Astrid Hamilton, analyst at BMI-T. =93Availabili= ty of finances is the single biggest factor in determining the amount spent= on IT and thus flexible financing options are important.=94

In the SME sector, hardwa= re and software spend is greater than spend on IT services, with companies = generally spending on IT in line with their rate of growth.

Corporations spend a high= er percentage of IT budgets on IT services whilst the SME sector spends a h= igher percentage on software and hardware, as reflected below.
