African ICT status, part IV
African opportunity: IT market indicators
Mark Walker

The IT sector in sub-Saharan Africa including equipment, software and services is expected to generate close to $1 billi= on in revenues in 2005. This market is relatively immature compared t= o other developing regions such as Asia and South America and is dominated by hardware and equipment.

The hardware component is in the region of 70% of the overall v= alue. This is expected to decline over the next few years as corporat= ions and governments embark on plans to leverage existing hardware b= y integrating systems and deploying software to extract benefit f= rom these platforms.

The outlook for this sector is respectable =96 5.6% compound an= nual growth rate (CAGR) revenue growth overall is forecast up to 200= 8 with bright spots indicated for PCs at 15.3% CAGR and storage a= t 19.4% CAGR for the period.

The software sector represents close to 10%, but is plagued by piracy especially in packaged applications. Revenue outlook in = the software sector to 2008 is estimated to reach about 14% CAGR.
As these markets develop this is expected to decline steadily u= nder pressure of compliance, corporate governance and similar initiatives.

Services boom

The IT services account for about 18% of the market and are expected to boom in the future as integration, consulting, management, support and training opportunities arise in tandem = with increased complexity, coupled to greater requirements for accessibility, functionality and ease-of-use across all user sectors.

This transition is not going to be simple, as the business mode= l surrounding the supply of technology in Africa has previously b= een founded on the supply of tangible items, such as a servers or networks and the "free" supply of related intangible services required to commission and maintain this infrastructur= e. The concept of payment of fees for services as separate from th= e purchase of goods will require marketing and relationship build= ing.

Attractive markets=

Traditionally, the most attractive African regions for business development were estima= ted using a combination of gut feel, inaccurate or outdated GDP dat= a and population estimates =96 plainly not a scientific or accurate m= ethod that resulted in many millions in lost capital and wasted effor= t.

With greater transparency= and easier communications and regular flight schedules now the orde= r of the day far more sophisticated approaches using more accurate d= ata and specialised investigation have become possible.

Focus is the key to a successful outcome. Also never underestimate the time and resou= rces that will be required to initiate and implement any project successfully. Additional considerations would include culture, language, business customs, regulations, business cycles, partnerships and competition.

Currently strong interest is being given to Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, Namibia, Botswana and Tanzania, while companies that = have requisite language abilities are also showing interest in Mozam= bique and Angola.

Vertical sectors attracting attention are predominantly governm= ent agencies, especially those with financial, tax, regulatory or population database mandates such as finance, internal revenue, justice, customs and excise and home affairs. Specific niche requirements are often called for in safety and security. Other attractive vertical sectors include banking and insurance and telecommunications.

An important but often overlooked segment is that of small busi= ness, but is extremely challenging due to complexities of distributio= n channel structuring, availability of financing instruments to prospective technology users and the wide range of solutions required.

Practical considerations

The IT sector across Afri= ca is burgeoning and holds great potential for the foreseeable future= . IT offers a vehicle for the improvement at macro and micro economi= c levels and also ensures the social upliftment of Africa.

This exuberance and opportunity must be grounded in reality and= some practical considerations must be addressed if any of the above benefits are to felt. Three pillars must form the foundation of= any IT initiative undertaken in Africa, these are:

=B7          Relevance =96 is the solution required or proposed going to address a defined and specific requirement? No worse indictment exists than selling or buying a solution to a non-existent prob= lem.

=B7          Affordability = =96 African budgets are smaller and tighter than similar budgets in developed regions, the functionality require= d remains the same but the funds available are typically less. Th= is indicates a need not for dumping of "cheap" systems b= ut rather the use of innovative and considered approaches to achie= ve results in a more effective and efficient manner.

=B7          Sustainability= =96 are the solutions scalable? Can they be suppo= rted? Do skills exist to improve them as requirements evolve and beco= me more complex?

Success in Africa is the result of a considered approach, careful planning and uncomprom= ising execution. Players that heed this will enjoy a rich harvest in = the next few years.

Banking market

Branch growth from Asian banks

Financial Insights Asia/Pacific anticipates fresh round of b= ranch growth among Asia's banks

A report by global independent research and advisory firm, Fina= ncial Insights, an, IDC company, illustrates the strong momentum of b= ranch growth among Asia's leading banks.

Four markets =96 India, Indonesia, Thailand and China =96 will = see the highest levels of branch growth among other markets in the region. The impressive growth anticipated from these markets presents compelling evidence that despite the availability of alternative channels, banks still believe that branches are key= to customer relationships.

These findings and more are published in the Financial Insights report, The Dynamics of Branch Growth in Asia (Doc #FIN1685).
"Banks which have put together a well-crafted branch chann= el strategy and reinforcing that with an effective staffing strate= gy, are poised to take significant competitive advantage in their respective markets. Massive branch growth plans of banks tackli= ng increasingly competitive markets mean that a race for numbers w= ill ensue. However, we point out that banks should take a thoughtfu= l approach to branch expansion, ensuring that effectiveness is no= t sacrificed for speed and numbers," states Michael Araneta, senior research manager for Financial Insights Asia/Pacific IT Benchmarking Practice.

Hardware market

Boost for worldwide HDD semiconductor market

Significant growth in small form factor and mobile PC hard d= isk drives to boost worldwide hdd semiconductor market, IDC predict= s.

Significant growth in the small form factor and mobile PC hard = disk drive (HDD) segments will more than counterbalance flat growth = in the desktop PC and enterprise HDD segments to accelerate worldw= ide semiconductor revenue growth through 2009, IDC forecasts.

While the worldwide HDD semiconductor market will grow at a com= pound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.6% from 2004 to 2009, chip reven= ue in the small form factor HDD will experience the healthiest growth= rate with a 39.4% CAGR over the same period. IDC expects small form factor HDD chip revenue will represent nearly a quarter of the market by 2009.

"It is critical for HDD semiconductor suppliers to become mindful of end demand as volatile consumer markets grow to drive more and more HDD unit shipments," s= aid Shane Rau, programme manager, PC and Storage Semiconductors. "Consumer markets are also perilous for the growing confli= ct they represent between HDD storage and NAND flash memory storage."

The South African ICT market
In review
Mark Walker and Roy Blume

Preliminary figures indicate that the South African IT market g= rew 7.4% from R45 billion in 2004 to R48.3 billion in 2005 and is expected to reach R51.8 billion in 2006, an estimated year-on-y= ear growth rate of just over 7%. The strengthening of the rand and decreasing hardware prices influenced this moderate growth rate= .

Business issues such as compliance, customer intimacy, cost con= trol, process improvement and competitive differentiation have gained increased attention. The underlying technology that has strong = data storage, management, retrieval and security functionality that provides the means of adherence to regulatory or statutory requirements is coming to the fore.

BMI-T believes SA will also see a continuation of infrastructur= e spend by corporations and government, with emphasis in these se= ctors on extracting maximum value from existing systems and expanding= to include a closer alignment of IT to profitability objectives in= the commercial domain and social development in state sector.

The PC, server and data communications sectors are expected to continue at a healthy pace, at least in terms of unit shipments= if not in expenditure levels, due to the continuing commoditisatio= n of the hardware sector and the strong rand, which has made these products more affordable.

IT services

The software and IT services sector continued to perform well = =96 a recurrent theme in 2005 and likely also in 2006 will be the repositioning of many IT companies to play within this space. T= his is a difficult move for traditional players, evidenced by some = who experienced punishing learning curves as they attempted to migr= ate from a traditional reseller / system integrator business model = to a full-service company in 2005. Transition by many supply-side pl= ayers from the integrator / reseller role to a full-service role was = with much pain and consequence.

However, 2005 also saw some significant right-sizing in the loc= al IT supply sector, a trend that is expected to continue and intensi= fy in 2006. Suppliers are expected to continue to target their effort= s narrowly and align their product and service offerings to user expectations, as competition increases and value addition expectation increase.

Looking forward, BMI-T expects to see a marked increase in competitive activity on the supply side, which will mean a good= deal for the buyer. Exchange and interest rates are very attractive = for buyers who are making hay while the sun shines. SME and consume= r buyer segments will likely continue to show strong uptake as wi= ll the financial and some government areas.

Competitive pressure

In 2006, BMI-T predicts pretty much the same as this year growt= h wise, but expects more mergers and acquisitions on the supply s= ide due to increased competitive pressure. Many suppliers are expec= ted to shift from product focus to a more service focused delivery mechanism, although this has caused pain in 2005. A more consid= ered approach will likely come to the fore =96 even to the extent th= at some players may elect to differentiate themselves by remaining= in a reseller role but concentrating focus to narrow niche segments rather than attempting to change their business model.

From a technology perspective, service-oriented architecture (S= OA) is gaining momentum internationally and getting a foothold in S= A. Much learning and "buzz-busting" will occur in 2006 a= s this approach to technology system design is properly understoo= d and consequent impacts and applications thereof come to the fore.

Also BMI-T expects to see significant revisions in conventional licensing models as Web services begin to enter th= e mainstream. Similarly, the models deployed around copyright and intellectual property protection will also begin to be challeng= ed and reconsidered.

Africa will resurge strongly as a potential market especially a= s in many cases the initial groundwork has been laid and sound busin= ess cases, coupled with considered risk management strategies, are emerging to substantiate the opportunities across the region.
The "Google effect" (eg gOffice and the collaborative Web-based office) will continue to change the way the market se= es IT and will spur the traditional players to have a serious look at= the way they deliver product and services.

Vendors focus on customer experience

IT vendor customer experience teams projected to nearly doub= le through 2008, according to IDC.

IDC's Customer Experience Research practice estimates that staf= fing of the customer experience function in IT vendor companies will= grow by over 40% per year through 2008. Organisations that have previously invested in customer experience leadership expect th= eir teams to grow more than 80% during the same period.

IDC finds that IT vendors are beginning to focus on an end-to-e= nd orientation, looking beyond customer satisfaction to include prospects and buyers in their customer experience efforts. Howe= ver, across the vendor landscape there is a clear delineation as som= e organisations give lip service to an end-to-end approach but fo= cus on post-sales efforts.

"IT vendors must look more closely at how they staff, meas= ure, and impact the customer experience", states Bob Johnson, V= P, IDC Customer Experience Research. "Too often, vendor leade= rship gives high praise to the role of customer experience teams but = does not empower them to drive marketing, sales and operational change." Johnson predicts that 2006 represents a critical = point where vendors will invest in better management of the customer experience from an end-to-end perspective across awareness, consideration, purchase, application, leverage and advocacy.
IDC 2006 prediction

Vendors to rethink business models

IDC predicts that moderate spending growth will push IT vend= ors toward disruptive business models.

In its annual look at the year ahead, IDC predicts that moderat= e IT spending growth will force many IT vendors to rethink their pro= duct and service offerings, merger and acquisition opportunities, innovation strategies, delivery models and the competitive landscape.

"The IT and telecom industry convergence, consolidation, a= nd realignment of the past two years will continue in full stride = in 2006," said Frank Gens, senior VP of research at IDC. &quo= t;A critical new ingredient we'll see is the acceleration of disrup= tive business models: =93open innovation=94 in IT product and servic= e development (the open source effect) and online delivery of IT = as a service (the Google effect). These disruptive shifts will force= most vendors to perform a strategic gut check as they enter the year."
