Sou= th African VOIP players jostle for position

The hype surrounding voic= e over IP (VOIP) or perhaps more appropriately, voice over any protocol, ju= st may be starting to subside after the September 2004 announcement from th= e Minister of Communications. The announcement removed the restrictions on = VANS and ISPs, allowing them to offer VOIP from 1 February 2005. Now, the v= arious players are starting to jostle for position in this emerging market.=

A caveat is that currentl= y VOIP is a small slice of the overall voice revenues in South Africa =96 t= he majority of which go to Telkom. As an early prediction, VOIP revenues ar= e expected to grow from R30 million in 2005 to R630 million by 2009 represe= nting 3% of all fixed line voice revenues or, alternatively stated, only 0.= 8% of total voice =96 fixed and mobile combined. A major wildcard in respec= t of the VOIP market is expected to be the SNO, which by virtue of its NGN = (next generation network), all of its traffic will be IP based. This raises= the question of a definition of VOIP traffic. For forecasting purposes BMI= -T considers the way the telephony is conducted at the user end and how the= billing takes place, rather than just the physical transportation of IP pa= ckets over long distance trunks.

Fixed line voice revenues= have been flat over the past two years growing from R17.1 billion in 2001 = to R20.1 billion in 2004. Growth in voice calling revenues has in fact been= negative in recent years, if the positive impact of dial-up Internet call = charges is eliminated.

South Africa is expected = to follow a similar pattern to that of Australia, where the majority of VOI= P services are expected to be in the corporate sector with the residential = market contribution remaining small. In South Africa, the low penetration r= ate of broadband in homes and the high cost of VOIP terminals (currently be= tween R500 and R2 000) may be cited as one of the reasons for the dispropor= tionate market. We are likely to see some uptake of the PC to PC and Skype = type of applications in the near future but the impact will be small. It wi= ll also have very limited direct revenue potential, since these are general= ly very inexpensive (if not free) services.

South African VOIP revenues, = 2005-2010 ZAR(M)

Source: BMI-T, 2005

When discussing alternative voice services in the c= orporate environment, alternative forms of telephony are already in place, = such as traditional Least Cost Routing (LCR) via PBXs, with cell routers fo= r fixed to mobile traffic and call back operators. The largest companies al= so have their own international private leased circuits (IPLCs). These repr= esent large chunks of expenditure and are likely to be key targets for emer= ging VOIP services to erode. The benefits of VOIP will initially be focused= on cost savings, but over time the potential functional benefits of IP tel= ephony will become the more important switching criteria. Both cost savings= and the integration of converged voice and data communications into busine= ss processes will motivate customers. At this stage, the only significant e= xample of the integration of VOIP in the business process locally, has been= the contact centre industry. In time, other industries will latch on to th= e ability to use Web browser interfaces for multimedia information sharing.= Other functional features of IP telephony will include advanced communicat= ion and telephony features, such as unified messaging (including voice bein= g treated like any other messaging service such as e-mail) and follow-me / = find-me type features.

This leads to the questio= n of which players are likely to be the winners in the corporate alternativ= e voice scenario. System integrators will have the most to gain initially, = by providing voice optimisation consulting; and supplying and commissioning= next generation voice systems. These will include a healthy dose of data n= etwork upgrades. Those that have a mixture of network savvy with system in= tegration know-how with local and international expertise will do well in t= he corporate environment. Operators of various descriptions, by contrast, w= ill most often be playing in this space only because they have to =96 eithe= r as a defensive strategy, or as a source of differentiation for competitiv= e advantage when providing a managed VPN service.

Nigerian mobile market set to grow to over = 32 million subscribers

Nigeria is set to become = one of the major mobile cellular markets in Africa. It is expected to reach= over 23 million subscribers by the year 2007, says BMI-T.

The latest assessment of the Nigerian telecommunicat= ions opportunity has been covered in the BMI-T publication entitled The Nig= erian Telecommunications Market 2005. The publication highlights the growth= of the county=92s mobile subscriber base -- from 2.8 million in 2003 to 8.= 6 million by the end of 2004.

Richard Hurst, analyst an= d author of the report says that as at the end of 2004 the Nigerian mobile = market had achieved less than a third of its ultimate and yet almost untapp= ed potential.

"The GSM mobile market is= expected to continue an aggressive growth path with a gross subscriber bas= e of 32 million by the end of 2009 being regarded as reasonable, if not con= servative."

In addition, The Nigerian= Telecommunications Market 2005 highlights that the fixed line and fixed wi= reless sector of the market is expected to maintain a steady growth with th= e arrival of competition in the form of the Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) ope= rators and the Second National Operator, Globacom. Additional opportunities= exist in the data and wholesale provisioning market, Internet access and a= ll types of value added services.
 Printer market

The South African printer market exceeds al= l growth expectations

The South African printer= market recorded an outstanding growth of 17.8% in 2004.
Overall units of 441 950 = were shipped, holding a value of R795.48 million =96 growth of 2.7% over 20= 03, concludes BMI-T=92s South African Printer Market Report.

Kerry Hayes, research analyst at BMI-TechKnowledge, says t= hat the increase can be attributed to solid growth throughout all technolog= y sectors, especially in the inkjet and colour laser segments.

=93The inkjet segment was= driven largely by strong consumer purchase confidence and continuing high = spend-capacity condoned by the stable rand/dollar exchange rate= . This segment grew 18.2%, equating to 280 635 inkjet units shipments. Valu= e too experienced gains, where 13.2% growth justified vendor confidence in = this technology sector. Again though, the desktop colour laser market march= ed ahead to lead the pack in both unit and value growth =96 114.2% and 45.1= % respectively. The user market is recognising the value of colour in the b= usiness environment. The slowly falling cost per printed page is opening up= the affordability of this technology to more diverse markets. In the home = segment, digital photography-mania is driving the need for colour prints," = adds Hayes.

HP continued its dominanc= e of the overall South African printer market, achieving 42.7% overall mark= et share. The vendor took leadership of the inkjet, monochrome laser and co= lour laser segments, but Epson lorded over the serial dot matrix sector wit= h a market share of 55.8%. TallyGenicom was the highest-ranking vendor of t= he high-speed impact printer segment, with 65.2% market share.

Open source as a softwar= e and a service Roy Blume

Linux and open source in their simplest forms, ar= e software. In one instance an applica= tion, or a series of bund= led applications with m= any names, under the umbrella of Linux. = In the other instance,= a concept applicable = to software developmen= t and licensing. Despite popular opinion, th= is is nothing more than a methodology utilise= d for developing and delivering software applications and projects, one of wh= ich is Linux.

Having state= d this, the open sour= ce software (OSS) conc= ept is having a signifi= cant impact on the South African and worldwi= de IT markets. Existing software vendors ar= e being forced to tak= e a hard look at their licensing and reven= ue models. This, in tu= rn, will have repercuss= ions for the end user.&n= bsp;

Establishing the potential impact of= OSS on the local market= will require further investigation in tw= o areas: Linux, as SA= =92s most prominent OSS =93project=94; and = OSS methodology and its effects on the SA I= T services market.&nb= sp;

Linux/GNU <= br>
Linux products continue to forge a unique growth path,= from development through= to enterprise, resulti= ng in effective competiti= on existing between products. Transitio= ns that took place in = 2003 and continued into 2004/5 have resulte= d in Linux repositioning= from limited small scale= or pilot projects to n= ow making a serious pl= ay for increasingly scalable tasks.&nbs= p;

BMI-T's analysis uncovered that over= the past couple of year= s, several mainline Li= nux distributors shifte= d from a high-volume, low-value product portfolio to higher-value, lower-volume produc= ts that clearly offer attributes that are= far more in line with enterprise customer= s' needs. Linux contin= ues to be attractive as= a platform for infrastructure task= s, high-performance computing and Web-b= ased applications. BMI-T= has also observed incre= asing use of Linux as a platform for databa= se and application ser= ver software, albeit constituting a smal= l portion of overall = Linux use.

The long-awaited head-to-head compet= ition between Linux and Windows continues t= o be delayed, as Linux products nibble at = the edges of the Window= s world and, for now,= have aligned themselves = as the UNIX alternativ= e in the server operatin= g environment (SOE). = Some evidence of a Windo= ws to Linux erosion has started to appear, = but this is confined to basic network infrastructure and = Web deployments. BMI-T believes that mainstream, application-heavy Windows deployments continue to be fair= ly well insulated from Linux. This is due,= in part, to the restri= cted and often confusing= and conflicting informa= tion on return on invest= ment and total cost of ownership metrics a= nd how they are applie= d to the specific implementation requirements. =

On the client side,= an interesting scenari= o has developed, where th= e Linux desktop has b= ecome "good enough&q= uot; and under some distributions, can = even access native Windo= ws SOE electronic mess= aging systems and printer= s. Installation tools = have vastly improved, ma= king it possible for a n= ovice to install a Linux desktop successfull= y. However, as with th= e SOE market, application= s continue to be the anchor that stops u= sers from moving. <= br>
OSS and IT Services=

The IT servi= ces associated with GNU/Linux, OSS and = free software are some o= f the least researched. M= uch attention has been = given to shipments of ser= vers running Linux and o= n a small number of migration deals fro= m UNIX to Linux. The services designed t= o support and operate these systems, howe= ver, have received littl= e scrutiny.

The services ecosys= tem that surrounds open source and free sof= tware is greater than pur= e migration services. However, it remains= a relatively small ma= rket when compared to th= e service opportuniti= es offered by the proprietary platfor= ms. BMI-T estimated the= size of the OSS related services market in = South Africa at R204 mill= ion in 2004. It is expe= cted to reach R1 162 mil= lion by 2009. In other w= ords, the market for serv= ices around GNU/Linux, O= SS and free software i= s growing fast, but w= ill remain rather limit= ed in the foreseeable fut= ure when measured again= st the overall South African IT services expenditure.=

= Open source: is it softw= are or services revenue= ?

Source: BMI-T, 20= 05
Looking to the future, system integrators on the = whole will remain cautiou= s about open source, although a number o= f players have starte= d building offerings. Large system integr= ators will play a role in= the success of open sou= rce as they have strong relationships with = their large enterprise clients. OSS option= s are being aggressively explored to satisfy= the demands of customers.
Specialist service providers have emer= ged to meet the market= =92s demands for OSS and= free software. They are innovative, pro-act= ive and have a strong understanding of bo= th free software tools= and the nuances of the community.

Daniel Padiachy, telecoms analyst and co-author of = the report, says that due to = the relatively new or "fresh" nature = of the telecoms markets acro= ss Africa, most new investme= nt is expected to go into transmission and access components of the networks.

"However, looking fo= rward we expect to see a signif= icant shift of investment towar= ds the OSS/BSS/NSS element o= f the network as the networks m= ature and operators begin to roll-out more sophisticat= ed services to their subscribers." <= br>
The Africa Telecoms Infrastructure Market Rep= ort 2000-2009 also highlights= that the combined mobile and f= ixed line subscriber base in A= frica had risen to just under 1= 00 million, with 68% being m= obile by the end of 2004. Projections are that mobi= le subscribers could easily = reach 140 million in the next f= ive years.

"The rapid growth in subscribers is expected t= o translate into a wide opportunity for infrastru= cture and equipment vendors as operators, both mobile an= d fixed, attempt to satisfy= the demand. This forecast is considerably larger than previous projections, reflecting the global phenomenon of lowering affordability barriers ev= en further within the pre-pa= id model, and the net positi= ve economic impact on the individual subscriber of owning a phone," add= s Padiachy.

BMI-T anticipates that ne= twork operators will increasing= ly base their investment and pricing decisions on long-range incremental co= sting principles, as their full= y depreciated asset bases a= re leveraged into the future.

"This implies that, = post 2009, the market could gr= ow even further, based on measures to improve affordability levels, wit= h a gross subscriber base of between 180 to 200 millio= n being regarded as reasonable," conclud= es Padiachy.

Roy Blume, Services Divis= ion Manager at BMI-T, says, "We have witnessed a growing realisation among business and political organisations that ICT ca= n drive economic growth in Africa, one of the potent= ial areas that ICT can help i= n is that the mostly cash base= d economies of most African states result in the cash resources being held by t= he population, ICT has been identified as a tool to a= ssist in bringing the cash into= the formal banking sector. Th= e potential for sustainable economic growth and development in the majori= ty of African countries may stimulate ICT development= as a means of attaining this growth."
