ALAZAR DESSIE, DEPUTY GENERAL MANAGER
OF ABYSSINIA BANK ARRESTED
Alazar Dessie was taken into custody by Addis Ababa police on August 28,
2001. The police arrested Ato Alazar from his office at the Abyssinia bank
where he is now serving in the capacity of Deputy General Manager.
Ato Alazar Dessie, who is a naturalized U.S. citizen, returned to Ethiopia in
1994 and served as Deputy President of the Ethiopian Commercial Bank until he
was relieved from his position by the Bank's Board of Directors.
Ato Alazar is a banker who held managerial positions in many U.S. banks
before he returned home in 1994. Although no official statement was made
about the arrest of Ato Alazar it is suspected that his arrested is linked to

PRESIDENT NEGASSO GIDADA NOTIFIED OPDO OFFICE
THAT HE HAS CANCELED HIS MEMBERSHIP OF THE PARTY
In a letter he wrote to the OPDO Office, dated August 31, 2001,
(NEHASE 25, 1993), President Negasso notified the office that he has
voluntarily canceled his membership of the party. In his letter the president
outlined the reasons that led him to make his final decision to cancel his
membership.
The president noted that although he withdrew from the EPRDF Executive
Council a few months back, he remained a member of the OPDO and has
been paying his dues regularly. But, he said he was not allowed to
participate
in any of the meetings of the party to debate issues of importance to the
Oromo
people and to the country as a whole and to exercise his right to vote as
party member.
He in particular noted that the actions of General Abadulla and Girma Birru
are illegal and accused them of hijacking the party and making decisions in
violations of the statute of the party and the constitution of FDRE.
