Domestic Violence, Media Monitoring, Politics? This week?s edition of the NGO Pulse newsletter continues to focus on the 16 Days of No Violence Against Women and Children. SANGONeT programme assistant, Nicolle Beeby, reports on the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation ?South African Domestic Violence Act: Lessons from a Decade of Legislation and Implementation? conference which took place from 26-28 November 2008 in Johannesburg. She writes that after 10 years of implementing the legislation, survivors of domestic violence continue to experience secondary victimisation. Click here to read the full article. The link between gender violence and HIV/AIDS has always been emphasised during the 16 Days of Activism. The commemoration of World AIDS Day on 1 December provides the opportunity for us to reflect on how, as activists in the gender and women?s rights and HIV sectors, we respond to these epidemics. In its latest commentary series, titled ?HIV/AIDS: are we winning this war?? the University of KwaZulu-Natal?s Industrial Organisational & Labour Studies Research Unit, explores some of the not so often spoken about issues related to HIV and AIDS such as food prices and it impact on HIV; consumerism and the spread of HIV; access to treatment/ARVs in the collapse state of Zimbabwe, Africa's military as atypical workers and their struggles with HIV; abstinence vs contraceptives and issues pertaining to stigma. In another article, SANGONeT information coordinator, Butjwana Seokoma, reports on the 15th anniversary and website launch of Media Monitoring Africa (MMA), formerly known as the Media Monitoring Project. He congratulates the MMA on its website and brand. Click here to read his article. In his article, Christo van der Rheede, Executive Officer of the Stigting vir Bemagtiging deur Afrikaans, writes that the promise of a better life for all has vanished like mist before the sun and has been replaced by an intense fight for political survival. ?The time has come for South African politicians to practice the politics of joy and hope. This requires hard work, as lasting solutions for issues such as housing, service delivery, unemployment and crime can only be found when they apply their minds and not their hearts?, he writes. NGO Web Awards, Leadership, Online Fundraising... Welcome to the last edition of NGO Pulse for 2008. The year has had many highlights for SANGONeT, especially the launch of the NGO Pulse Portal and MobileActive08. We are looking forward to 2009 and hope that we will be meeting some of you personally as we embark on a SANGONeT roadshow in the first quarter of next year. Watch this space for details! In this week's edition of NGO Pulse, Butjwana Seokoma, SANGONeT information coordinator, writes about another highlight of this year: the 2008 NGO Web Awards. Seokoma shares some of the insights of the judges and writes that there is a growing recognition amongst NGOs of the importance of having an online presence. That we received 60 entries in this year's competition, is evidence of this. We congratulate the three winners: Career Planet , Gender Dynamix and Women'sNet , as well as the two organisations that received special mention awards: Alzheimers South Africa and South African History Online . The three winners each receive a prize to the value of R10 000 from Torque IT. Click here to read the full article. As South Africa gears up for elections next year, we can expect to see political parties moving their campaigns into top gear, visiting communities across the country to garner support. In this context, Imraan Buccus' concern over the "power display" of the "blue light cavalcades" certainly should be one that we all share. "The blue light scandals are just one sign of a deep crisis of leadership... If we do not all, across party lines and ideological divides, unite in the demand for a political leadership animated by principle rather than a desire for the most base displays of power we'll be the laughing stock of the world. The time to stop this madness is now", he writes. Click here to read the full article. The deteriorating conditions in Zimbabwe have also been described as madness by some. A reader of NGO Pulse expressed his frustration and despair when he wrote: "Zim is such an amazing country and its people are creative dynamos, and I am so fed up with watching them ground into the dust by our so-called Southern African liberators... I want us as Africa for once to do the right thing, but it just seems to be beyond our grasp. A real train smash playing itself out, and there is an uncomfortable acceptance of this all". Find out about the humanitarian response by reading SANGONeT executive director, David Barnard's blog . David has also posted a blog about the potential of online fundraising. "Although only a small percentage of NGOs are actively involved in fundraising through the Internet, a number of factors will contribute to accelerated growth in the next few years", he writes. Click here to read the full blog . We would like to thank you for your support throughout the year. The first edition of NGO Pulse in 2009 will be published on 14 January.
