Quote of the week
In a democracy the poor will have more power than the rich, because
there are more of them, and the will of the majority is supreme.
- Aristotle, Greek Philosopher.
Comment of the week
These constraints amount to a denial of the right to access healthcare
for some of the poorest and exacerbate existing vulnerability of
marginalised groups and individuals within the country.
- Zonke Majodina, Deputy Chairperson, South African Human Rights Commission.

Elections, SABC, Newsflashes…
“The people have spoken,” writes Butjwana Seokoma in an article we
publish in this week’s edition of NGO Pulse. Reflecting on the election
process and outcomes he writes that the large numbers of young people
and the high voter turnout generally are indicative of a citizenry who
not only are interested in exercising their right to vote, but who want
to be part of processes that result in qualitative change.
“I am looking forward to the next four years. We have democratically
elected the new administration. Like the majority of South Africans, I
expect the government to fulfill the promises they have made and to
create ‘a better life for all’. I want to live in a country in which
people have employment, access to quality health care and education and
feel safe.” Click here

read the article.
Also in this edition, SANGONeT’s CSI Programme Assistant, Nicolle Beeby,
blogs about EISA Observer Team Mission’s “Interim Statement on the 2009
South African National and Provincial Elections” shared at a press
conference she recently attended. “The EISA Mission team believes that
the IEC deserves to be congratulated for demonstrating high levels of
professionalism. The mission believes that the results that will be
delivered will be a reflection of the will of the South African people,”
she writes. Click here

We also publish an article by Kate Skinner and Professor Tawana Kupe who
write of the ongoing tribulations of the South African Broadcasting
Corporation. “The SABC has been lurching from crisis to crisis to the
extent that its editorial and programming credibility, financial
viability and institutional sustainability are now seriously in
question. Now is the time for everyone to participate in the debate on
substantive issues so that we can get the public broadcaster that we
want and deserve, and one that can sustain and deepen our democracy,”
they write. Click here

Lastly we remind you to express your support for the development and
implementation of a comprehensive National Broadband Strategy for South
Africa. To date 1035 individuals and 124 organisations have added their
signatures, click here <http://www.broadband4africa.org.za> to add yours.
As always we invite your comments and suggestions.
