African Aid, 'Do It' Day, SABC Board…
Writing in this week’s edition of NGO Pulse, Archbishop Njongo Ndungane,
Founder and President of African Monitor, argues that the global
financial crisis makes it essential that we ensure available resources
are used effectively and that neglected sources of funding are exploited.
Commenting on agriculture in Africa he writes: “The science and
technologies have been developed by African scientists and
entrepreneurs; good practices are in place in countries such as Malawi
and Burkina Faso to show that where political will is made operational
miracles happen. What is now needed is to stop the talking and get on
with it so as to move Africa from being a basket case to being the bread
basket- the writing is on the wall - it is do or die.” Click here

to read the full article.
We also publish an article by GreaterGood South Africa about the
upcoming 'Do It' Day on 18 September 2009. According to GreaterGood
South Africa, 'Do It' Day is about using resources that are readily
available - ourselves - to uplift our communities. It is a powerful,
symbolic tool for change, with the potential to transform mindsets about
giving. “This year we’re calling for a ‘National Strike’ – not to down
tools, but rather to pick them up to fight poverty and underdevelopment
around the country. With the backing of organised celebrities, business,
civil society and thousands of ordinary citizens possibly even the
President himself, 'Do It' Day 2009 is going to be the biggest yet”,
they write. Click here

As mentioned earlier this month, the SANGONeT Zimbabwe Thetha Discussion
Forum took place in Harare on 21 July. Blogging about the event David
Barnard, SANGONeT Executive Director writes: “… The Permanent Secretary
in the Ministry of ICT was the keynote speaker and he acknowledged the
strategic importance of ICTs to the development of Zimbabwe. He also
highlighted recent progress in the ICT arena, including the phasing out
of import duties on IT equipment and reduction in mobile charge rates.”

Lastly, we invite you to support the SOS Campaign’s efforts to ensure
civil society participation in nominating suitable candidates for the
SABC Board. The Portfolio Committee’s extension of the deadline for
nominations to 14 August 2009 is most welcomed, and organisations are
requested to play their part in making sure that the new Board is
representative and up for the task. Click here

As always we invite your comments ideas and suggestions.
