Imagine a world in which women and men are free of the socially constructed roles assigned to them. What kind of world would that be? Would the epidemics of HIV and violence against women continue? Would poverty and inequality continue to deepen as they do now? Or would the world be a different place to the one we know now? In this week's edition of NGO pulse, the two articles we publish begin to imagine a different world. In the first, Helen Alexander from the Sonke Gender Justice Network reports on the recent MenEngage Africa Symposium. The 240 delegates, representing 25 countries explored ways of working with men, changing attitudes, presenting new role models, and mobilising men against gender-based violence and HIV. As one of the delegates put it: "I am a young man with a dream, a dream of a future, a prosperous future, where men, women, boys, and girls, young and old are equal and enjoy gender equitable lives; where men and women are regarded equally and not treated differently based on their faces and sex; where boy and girl children have equal opportunities, at home, at school and in public places. Yes, I am a real young man working for that future. And that future is now." Click here to read the full article. In the second article, Charlotte Sutherland from Consultancy Africa Intelligence, urges governments to involve women in food production empowerment initiatives to lift communities out of hunger and inequality. Sutherland argues that inequalities between men and women and the rich and the poor are at the root of hunger. She blames hunger on what she calls "perverse policies that treat food purely as a commodity, not a right". "It is because of these policies that most developing countries no longer grow enough to feed themselves, and that their farmers are among the hungriest and poorest people in the world. Meanwhile, the rich world battles growing obesity," Sutherland writes. Click here to read the full article. We also highlight a recent blog posted to the NGO Pulse portal by Sally-Jean Shackleton, the executive director of Women'sNet. Shackleton, blogging during the recent Intersections learning event held by Oxfam Australia, reflects on a session she facilitated. "One of the fundamentally challenging things that transgender issues spark in people is a challenge to the gender binary -- that if you have a penis, you are a man, and if you have a vagina, you are a women -- and everyone has one or the other. That your gender -- the way you dress, behave and present yourself, corresponds with what's in your pants. And, the content of your pants determines who you are allowed to love and have sex with", she writes. Click here to read more. The Constitution guarantees South Africans the right to decent housing. Since 1994, the government has provided just over four million RDP houses. However, the number of people on waiting lists for houses remains unacceptably high. In a context of increasing levels of frustration amongst citizens because of poor service delivery, the provision of adequate housing is a matter of urgency. In this week?s edition of NGO Pulse, Ronald Eglin, senior projects coordinator at Afesis-corplan, looks at problems and frustrations that characterise the delivery of houses in South Africa. Eglin argues that insufficient money and resources means that government cannot ?quickly? provide houses to everyone. He writes that if past housing delivery rates are projected into the future, poor people will still be waiting for their RDP houses in 2032. ?In the absence of any alternative, households have not much choice but to occupy illegal informal settlements. There is an urgent need for the South African government to expand the number of alternative ways for the poor to access tenure security and basic services, explains Eglin. Writing in her personal capacity, Winnie Nonofo Motseokae from the African Human Rights Consortium, reflects on Botswana?s 10th democratic election which took place on 16 October. Motseokae writes that lack of state funding for Botswana?s political parties limit opposition parties? ability to effectively participate in the country?s democracy. She shares the African Union?s sentiment that Botswana should consider state funding of political parties to strengthen its democracy and level the playing field. ?State funding can go a long way in discouraging politicians from going to any public office with the intention to loot state funds to pay for the debts incurred during their elections campaigns. It can also result in the mushrooming of a generation of political parties and independent candidates who vie for votes with the view to benefit financially from the state?, Motseokae writes. The book argues that while progress has been made in combating HIV, there is still not enough investment in a fully-fledged national portfolio of programmes to prevent it. Kunene shares her experiences of working with loveLife as a GroundBreaker in 2005. Click here to read the full article. We also highlight the launch of the new HIV-911 website. The increasing number of informal settlements in South Africa indicates that we are moving at a slow pace in providing housing for the poor. With millions of people still on the waiting list, our country is facing a housing crisis. The announcement by Human Settlements Minister, Tokyo Sexwale, that the department will spend R1.3 billion on demolishing and rebuilding defective RDP houses after a national housing audit uncovered shoddily built homes in every province, adds to the problem. Last week we published an article by Ronald Eglin, senior projects coordinator at Afesis-corplan, which looked at frustrations that charecterised the delivery of houses in the country. In this week?s edition of NGO Pulse, Richard Ballard, a senior lecturer in the School of Development Studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, writes that introducing legislation such as the KwaZulu-Natal Slum Act - which was aimed at eradicating slums by 2010 - cannot solve the slums problem in the country. He argues that slums cannot be targeted for eradication until ?We eradicate their causes: poverty, inequality, unemployment and labour exploitation. And while the objective of eradicating shacks is not bad in principle, it can be detrimental in a context where these causes remain firmly in place.? Click here to read the full article. The number of households living in poverty is on the rise as jobs are lost as a result of the global economic downturn. The majority of affected people enter the informal economy as an immediate measure to generate income and provide for their families. In another article, Isaac Mnguni, an International Human Rights Exchange Programme intern at SANGONeT, investigates the challenges that informal traders experience as they exercise their constitutional right to practice trade of their choice. Mnguni finds that informal traders have to deal with officials from the Johannesburg Metro Police Department, who harass them and sometimes even confiscate their goods. He argues that authorities must consult informal traders when making decisions that affect them. Click here to read the full article.
