Comment of the week The recent retrenchments - blamed on the world economic crisis - have thrown approximately another million people into crisis this year. This contributes to economic hardship, leaving millions vulnerable. Unemployment increases the challenges of eradicating hunger - without income, there is even less to spend on food. - Idah Makukule, Researcher, Studies in Inequality and Poverty Institute. SANGONeT is pleased to announce the shortlisted entries for the 2009 South African NGO Web Awards. The 63 entries received for this year?s competition reflect a range of South African NGOs who are using social media in innovative and exciting ways to meet their objectives and also to raise funds. Whether it is a facebook group or cause, a blog or twitter, South African NGOs are exploiting the tremendous reach and ease of social media. Click here to see the shortlist. In NGO Pulse this week Brett Davidson, a media trainer and active blogger, shares his thoughts about his experiences at the Digital Citizens Indaba and Highway Africa Conference in Grahamstown. He emphasises the huge potential that social media and cellphones, in particular, have for advocacy and communication in Africa. Writing about South Africa he says: ??when it comes to social media on phones, the big kid on the block is definitely MXIT?. Click here to read his blog. Continuing our focus on the Stand Up and Take Action Campaign , Idah Makukule writes that unless all sectors of society commit to challenging inequality and eradicating poverty, the MDG goals will remain out of reach. She writes about the realities of Vosloorus, a community on the East Rand of Gauteng where, ?In the absence of paid work many households rely on social security grants which are used for various micro-enterprises and also to provide basic needs. The funds received from the grants are however eroded exponentially by food inflation?. Click here to read the full article. We also publish an article by Jonathan Mundell, a director at Consultancy Africa Intelligence, who writes that while there have recently been breakthroughs in the quest for an HIV vaccine, donor funding for vaccine research remains a challenge. ?According to a report by the HIV Vaccine and Microbicide Resource Tracking Working Group, entitled ?Adapting to Realities: Trends in HIV Prevention Research Funding 2000 to 2008? in which the group traces the funding trends of HIV and AIDS treatment research, funds for vaccine research decreased dramatically by 10% in 2008. Data from the report also confirms that funding for microbicides increased by 8%, while PrEP research received 13% more funding,? he writes. Click here to read the full article. In 24 hours the Turbine Hall in Newtown, Johannesburg, will be transformed into a dynamic and innovative work space as the 2009 SANGONeT ?Social Media for NGOs? conference kicks off. Over 150 participants will come together to share their experiences and also learn how they can practically use social media to deepen their work. For those of you not able to attend the Johannesburg or Cape Town events, we will be putting social media tools into action for reporting and documenting, so you will be able to follow the conference. This includes: * Live-blogging the conference - you can watch a minute-by-minute broadcast of the sessions as they unfold - both participants and those who are not at the event can visit the conference site and will be able to add their own comments, and even ask questions. Watch the conference website as the proceedings begin. * Looking for shorter and punchier updates - follow the conference on twitter . * Look out for speaker presentations on Slideshare , the presentation sharing site, all under the tag #sango09. * Lastly the Social Media for NGOs wiki was established at the beginning of 2009 and is a collaboration between SANGONeT and the African Commons Project to share information around social media and its application by and for South African NGOs. During the conference we?ll be developing the resources on the wiki to document the case studies and examples, challenges and solutions discussed at the event, with the aim of creating a repository of South African specific applications of social media in the NGO context. Writing in this week?s edition, the NGO Pulse team asks: ?Social media, web 2.0 and the mobile web are terms that have gained increased visibility in South Africa and across the world. But what do they mean for non-governmental organisations working for social change in resource poor communities? Why should NGOs care about technology when they are finding it hard enough to serve their constituencies and have an impact?? Click here to read more. We also publish an article by Watson Hamunakwadi, coordinator of the Stand Up South Africa Campaign, who writes about the actions that organisations and individuals will undertake across South Africa from 16-18 October as part of the global Stand Up Campaign. Participants at the SANGONeT Conference will also ?Stand Up? in support of the Campaign on 16 October. Click here to read the full article. As promised, this week we highlight the successful ?Social Media for NGOs? conference that SANGONeT hosted in Johannesburg and Cape Town. The dust has settled and we are getting back to business as usual. As for SANGONeT, using Cover It Live for ?live blogging? the sessions, Twitter , a social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and receive messages known as ?tweets? and Flickr to share photographs, gave added meaning to this year?s theme: ?Social Media for NGOs?. View the Johannesburg and Cape Town live blogs. In this week?s edition of NGO Pulse newsletter, David Barnard, SANGONeT?s executive director, reflects on the conferences' achievements. Barnard states that Facebook is the most popular social media tool, adding that only 5% of NGOs use blogs and 1% use Twitter in South Africa. He says that fundraising through the Internet is still in its infancy, while very few NGO websites are mobile-friendly. ??the uptake of social media tools in the South African NGO sector will most probably experience significant growth and expansion in the next few years,? says Barnard. Mukendi writes that: ?It appears to me that most of us have heard about social tools but still have to realise its potential in our personal and organisational work.? ?Social media is a great tool that organisations, especially NGOs can use to communicate with their audience, market their services, communicate with their networks or improve the way they work,? explains Mukendi. Among others things, SANGONeT team, with no events management company to assist, ensured the conference was well planned, marketed and sponsored ? in addition to finding proper venues and finding the technology required to make sure its objectives were met. Nhlanhla Kunene, SANGOTeCH programme assistant, shares some of her experiences. Click here for more information.
