Quote of the week
A key feature of social media is the integration of different platforms
as well as the ability to direct different kinds of content and formats
to particular spaces.
- Adam Mukendi, Project Officer of the Citizen Journalism in Africa
project.
Comment of the week
...given the global explosion of social media tools, South Africa’s high
mobile phone penetration and the eagerly awaited increase in local
broadband capacity in the next few years as a result of the arrival of
various undersea cables, the uptake of social media tools in the South
African NGO sector will most probably experience significant growth and
expansion in the next few years..
- David Barnard, Executive Director, SANGONeT.

2009 Conference, Social Media, Toolkits….
As promised, this week we highlight the successful ‘Social Media for
NGOs’ conference that SANGONeT hosted in Johannesburg and Cape Town. The
dust has settled and we are getting back to business as usual.
As for SANGONeT, using Cover It Live <http://www.coveritlive.com> for
‘live blogging’ the sessions, Twitter <http://www.twitter.com>, a social
networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and
receive messages known as ‘tweets’ and Flickr <http://www.flickr.com> to
share photographs, gave added meaning to this year’s theme: ‘Social
Media for NGOs’. View the Johannesburg
<http://www.ngopulse.org/node/10279/johannesburg> and Cape Town
<http://www.ngopulse.org/conference2009> live blogs.
In this week’s edition of NGO Pulse newsletter, David Barnard,
SANGONeT’s executive director, reflects on the conferences'
achievements. Barnard states that Facebook is the most popular social
media tool, adding that only 5% of NGOs use blogs and 1% use Twitter in
South Africa. He says that fundraising through the Internet is still in
its infancy, while very few NGO websites are mobile-friendly.
“…the uptake of social media tools in the South African NGO sector will
most probably experience significant growth and expansion in the next
few years,” says Barnard. Click here

more information.
In another article, Adam Mukendi, Project Officer of the Citizen
Journalism in Africa Project, shares his experiences and lessons leant
during the 2009 Conference. Mukendi writes that: “It appears to me that
most of us have heard about social tools but still have to realise its
potential in our personal and organisational work.”
“Social media is a great tool that organisations, especially NGOs can
use to communicate with their audience, market their services,
communicate with their networks or improve the way they work,” explains
Mukendi. Click here

Planning and preparations played a key role in making this year’s
conference a success. Among others things, SANGONeT team, with no events
management company to assist, ensured the conference was well planned,
marketed and sponsored – in addition to finding proper venues and
finding the technology required to make sure its objectives were
met. Nhlanhla Kunene, SANGOTeCH programme assistant, shares some of her
experiences. Click here

In other news, SANGONeT is hosting a one-day Zambia Thetha ICT
Discussion Forum in Lusaka. This event forms part of SANGONeT's Regional
Thetha ICT Project and discussions were informed by a research report
