Quote of the week
"While our increased budgetary allocation to the social sector is
commendable, supervision of how services are rendered is even more
important."
- Peter Kimemia, Afesis-corplan.
Comment of the week
"The lion's share of CSI funding locally is channelled into education,
health and HIV, and social and community development, understandably.
However, food security -- as a class of development project -- falls
seventh on the list after Enterprise Development and the Environment."
- Graeme Wilkinson Senior CSI Practitioner, Tshikululu Social Investments.

Unemployment, Food Security, Blog...
South Africa's nine provinces, like the rest of the world, have suffered
massive job losses due to the global economic downturn. The recession
affected both big and small businesses and left millions of workers
jobless worldwide. In addition, many families have been pushed back into
extreme poverty, and governments are struggling to meet the 2014
deadline for achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals
<http://www.ngopulse.org/article/millennium-development-goals>.
In this week's issue of NGO Pulse, Peter Kimemia, who manages all
programme activities at Afesis-corplan, takes a close look at how the
global financial crisis impacted on unemployment in the Eastern Cape.
Kimemia argues that the massive job losses the province suffered during
the crisis set the province back five years in terms of job creation -
returning to employment levels registered in 2004.
He is of the view that the provincial budget should reflect an explicit
appreciation of the need to grow the economy and create meaningful jobs.

Last week, we published an article
<http://www.ngopulse.org/article/women-and-food-insecurity-zimbabwe-stuck-between-gender-norms-economic-downturn-and-climate-0> by
Godfrey Maringira and Charlotte Sutherland of Consultancy Africa
Intelligence, in which they said the combination of climate change and
the global economic downturn have resulted in food insecurity in many
African countries.
This week, we bring you an article by Graeme Wilkinson, a senior CSI
practitioner at Tshikululu Social Investments, which focuses on the
impact that food security projects can have in poor communities.
Wilkinson argues that teaching poor and malnourished communities how to
cultivate nutritious food is the most noble and the most cost effective
food security intervention.
"A culture of growing one's own food is re-entrenched, with a small but
growing minority of beneficiaries now making a living from their food
gardens -- earning enough money to send their kids to functional schools
and to save for the future," explains Wilkinson. Click here

In a new blog post published on the NGO Pulse portal this week, Rajesh
Latchman, coordinator of the National Welfare Forum, comments on the
lack of a pro-poor developmental agenda in current policy-making
processes. He argues that that civil society should seek opportunities
for collective policy advocacy to once again bring pro-poor
developmental policies to the fore.
"The macro-level developmental state agenda needs to incorporate
people-centred development priorities as a centrepiece, if we are to
deliver on the mandate of a better life for all."

We are pleased to make the first announcement about the 6th Annual

the previous five annual events, the 2010 conference will focus on
"Fundraising in the Digital World".
The two-day event will be held from 1-2 September 2010 in Johannesburg,
followed by one-day seminars on 3 September 2010 in Durban and 6
