    Quote of the week

"The inception of the costly new passport has pushed migration further
underground, especially for the most poor. Such a high barrier to legal
migration is forcing more people to go the illegal route, which can make
people more at risk to human traffickers who exploit the associated
vulnerabilities."

- Fred Katerere, Freelance Journalist based in Maputo.

    Comment of the week

"...in contrast to the FIFA World Cup, we have created our own
contra-World Cup for the poor communities by the poor communities that
is not exploiting people or marginalising people, but involving people
and creating new spaces of exposure and participation."

- Ashraf Cassiem, Coordinator, Anti-Eviction Campaign.

    World Cup, Borders, Employment…

The 2010 FIFA World Cup has provided an opportunity for South Africa to
deliver world class infrastructure and to demonstrate its competence in
hosting major events. However, as the world joins the African continent
in celebrating this historic event, the poor have been forgotten.

In this week’s issue of NGO Pulse, we bring you an article by Ashraf
Cassiem, coordinator at the Anti-Eviction Campaign (AEC), focusing on
the ‘Poor People’s World Cup’ (PPWC) in Cape Town. Cassiem points out
that supporting the PPWC will make the participating communities feel
that people care about them and that they are not forgotten.

“To all the tourists: don’t stay only in the controlled spaces bounded
by FIFA rules and regulations, but move beyond these areas to experience
the true spirit of what the game of soccer is all about,” he explains.

In another related development, Africa Goal, in partnership with the
Southern Africa HIV and AIDS Information Dissemination Service, has
developed ‘HIV Know the Score: An Interactive HIV Prevention World Cup
Booklet’, as part of the Africa Goal 2010 project. The booklet provides
important information about HIV prevention. Click here

South Africa and Mozambique have a long way to go in curbing human
trafficking and human smuggling. Big cities are often targeted as
marketplaces by human traffickers, human smugglers and international
syndicates who sell young girls and women to other countries. Poverty
and unemployment, especially in the rural areas, is adding to the problem.

In another article, Fred Katerere, a Maputo-based freelance journalist,
focuses on a Mozambican who has been assisting undocumented migrants
from that country into South Africa for the past 10 years. Katerere
argues that it is easy for migrants to be transported across the border
into the country without proper documents, because our posts are ‘porous’.

“Another factor encouraging Mozambicans to turn to illegal migration
methods is the hefty costs of the new biometric passport. At an
equivalent of R1 000, it is out of reach of many Mozambicans,” he
maintains. Click here

Although Bafana Bafana suffered a devastating loss in last night’s match
against Uruguay in the World Cup, there is still hope that we can
qualify for the next round of the tournament. The team needs our support
and encouragement. Click here
