We write this statement to acknowledge and listen to the pain of Zimbabwean women and to support their quest to become full citizens which we in South Africa are also fighting for. We recognise that in the context of poverty, displacement, violence, and exclusion state oppression adds another unbearable layer to women?s oppression which we are determined to fight together. ..................................................................... 04/10/2007 - Ideas on working with girls - free CD available Women.Ink Women, Ink., a project of the International Women?s Tribune Centre (IWTC), has compiled a resource collection of games, training manuals, workshop guides etc. for teachers, trainers and development workers who are working for and with girls. "AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria pose the greatest challenges," the document reads. "However, they should not overshadow the severe burden of other communicable diseases." ..................................................................... 04/16/2007 - Portugal Government Legalizes Abortion Feminist Majority Foundation Anibal Cavasco Silva, president of Portugal, ratified a new law Tuesday legalizing abortion up until the 10th week of pregnancy. The legislation was the result of a referendum on Friday that overwhelmingly favored the legalization of abortion. Although Cavasco Silva consented to the new law, he stated that he believes that all women who are seeking to have the procedure should be shown an ultrasound of the fetus, they should be informed about the option of adoption, and be educated about the possible and psychological consequences of an abortion, reports USA Today. Despite Cavasco Silva?s personal beliefs, the new law only requires a mandatory three-day reflection period until the procedure is granted, reports CNN. ..................................................................... 04/16/2007 - Hundreds injured in Zim political violence www.iol.co.za An independent doctors organisation said on Sunday that hundreds of Zimbabweans have been injured, maimed or traumatised in a surge of political violence in the past month by security authorities. The conference has had many merits and the organisers should be commended on their efforts and the hard work that has gone into putting together a truly representative Summit. "We have managed to mobilise children from all areas to be representative in all respects, making sure that all the voices of children are heard," said Leapia Msibi of ICASA. "It's been a success because never before have children had such a platform to vent out on." ..................................................................... 04/16/2007 - Raising Children Orphaned by AIDS: Learning from the Frontline Experts http://www.worlded.org In sub-Saharan Africa, by 2010 it is estimated that 25 million children will be orphaned or will be considered vulnerable because of HIV. For the past five years in Uganda, World Education has been at the forefront of efforts to help families and local organizations raise these children in the communities where they live. While efforts are laudable, most people are completely overwhelmed by the sheer number of children needing their care and guidance. Government policies developed at high-levels are well-intended but aren't easily understood by people working on the ground, meaningful connections to government officials are often weak, and dedicated financial investments aren't getting to the communities who ultimately shoulder the burden of raising these children. ..................................................................... 04/16/2007 - New strategy to tackle reproductive health issues Irin News Ethiopia has launched a national strategy on adolescent and reproductive health that aims to tackle the problems of early marriages and pregnancies, female circumcision, abduction and rape, and poor access to healthcare for 10- to 24-year- olds. We write this statement to acknowledge and listen to the pain of Zimbabwean women and to support their quest to become full citizens which we in South Africa are also fighting for. Passing through certain parts of Rome and its surroundings, one is likely to see women -- or often, girls -- lining the streets. Via Guilia is one such street known for prostitution, but there are others. To much of the world, these women and girls are mere prostitutes, but to Sister Eugenia Bonetti, they are victims of the most dehumanizing and crippling type of slavery. Sister Eugenia, who is also the head of the Italian Union of Major Superiors, was recently presented with the Woman of Courage award by the U.S. State Department for her efforts to combat trafficking in persons. ..................................................................... 04/10/2007 - Eritrea Bans Female Genital Cutting Feminist Majority Foundation The Eritrean government has announced that all practices of female genital mutilation are banned. By early this week about 6 000 people had signed up to several Internet websites to protest government?s intended giveaway of 7,100 hectares of forestland to sugar producing investors, referred to as SCOUL, for conversion into sugarcane plantation. ..................................................................... 04/10/2007 - Ugandan adultery law 'too sexist' GAIN Uganda's adultery law has been scrapped by the Constitutional Court because it treated men and women unequally. The law made it an offence for a married woman to have an affair, but it allowed a cheating husband to have an affair with an unmarried woman. The attorney general said the move may encourage immorality and promiscuity. ..................................................................... 04/10/2007 - An Outbreak Kept From Breaking Out Ips News South Africa seems to have succeeded in preventing an outbreak of Extreme Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (XDR-TB) from spiralling out of control and spreading beyond its borders, at least for now. XDR-TB is a more serious form of Multidrug Resistant TB (MDR-TB). While various strains of MDR-TB can resist treatment by certain "first-line drugs" -- drugs used as the first line of defence against the disease -- XDR-TB is also resistant to various second-line drugs. ..................................................................... 04/10/2007 - Malawi Announces Plans to Decrease Maternal Mortality Feminist Majority Foundation Last weekend the government of Malawi announced that it will adopt a new plan to combat high levels of maternal mortality and infant death. Launched by the health ministry in collaboration with United Nations agencies on Tuesday, the Adolescent and Youth Reproductive Health Strategy (AYRH) will be implemented over eight years. ..................................................................... 04/16/2007 - Agenda 2007 Subscriptions Agenda We are well into 2007, and we are busy preparing to launch our subscription service for the year with our first journal, issue 71. Uganda's Minister of State for ICT Alintuma Nsambu told HANA that since early this year the government has been working with the Americans to develop the computer, the first of its kind on the African continent. ..................................................................... 04/16/2007 - South Africa sets pace for regional gender equality www.afrol.com Later this year, women in Southern Africa expect a leap forward when it comes to gender equality as Heads of State are discussing more binding commitments to raise women's share of decision-making positions to 50 percent.
