"When my neighbours learnt that I was positive, they made sure that I was thrown out of the rental house I was living in with my wife and three children," said Borauzima Lukabia, 34, in Bukavu, the provincial capital. ..................................................................... 08/06/2007 - Government urged to act over sexual abuse of women Irin News Human rights activists and at least one government official are hopeful the Ivorian leadership will take action on growing evidence that government and rebel forces sexually abused hundreds - if not thousands - of women during the conflict and continue to do so today. ..................................................................... 08/06/2007 - Did you say cell phones for development? ?Yes, technology can do anything, really, but people have to drive it? APC News Considering the rapidly growing presence of cell phones in the developing world, interest in their role for advancing development goals is only natural. And, considering the demographic overlap between those most affected by HIV/AIDS and cell phone users, it only makes sense that a major focus be put on how this low-cost technology can fight this deadly pandemic. APC- member Women?sNet recently engaged in a UNICEF-driven speed assessment of fifteen projects that apply cell phones towards development objectives in Africa, with a particular focus on HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care. ..................................................................... 08/06/2007 - Educating for activism: Sonke Gender Justice?s One Man Can training manual on gender, HIV/AIDS and migration Sonke Gender Justice Sonke Gender Justice (Sonke) seeks your support as we revise our One Man Can workshop manual on gender, HIV/AIDS and human rights for use in Southern Africa (currently available at: http://www.genderjustice.org.za/onemancan/workshop-materials/workshop- activities-manual.html.) And one of the best is to see the changing face of leadership and influence. Apartheid was an appalling system for many varied reasons. One of them was that its vision of a leader in society was static and one dimensional. Come the new Constitution and all that was changed. From the colour of the sitting of the first rainbow Parliament (where women took their seats of power for the first time) to the value we attach to being representative, this is a different society with a diverse leadership. ..................................................................... 08/06/2007 - Attention: All Women's or Gender Based Organisations! Reproductive Rights Alliance TERMINATION OF PREGNANCY AMMENDMENT ACT (CTOPA) No 38, 2004 is currently under discussion at the National Council of Provinces (NCOP). The Amendment Act was the subject of a Constitutional court challenge because wide public consultation did not happen at the provincial level; the Amendment Act has therefore been referred back to the NCOP for public consultation. The Amendment Act increases access to terminations by decentralizing services, and adding nurses to the list of health practitioners able to perform terminations. Submissions must be limited to the Amendment Act, and not to the original Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act of 1996. ..................................................................... 08/06/2007 - Kenya: Cyber Law Being Developed All Africa Kenya's cyber law, when enacted, could be adopted as a model law for other countries within the East African Community (EAC) - Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi - which are yet to enact such kind of legislation to give regulatory direction for ICT-related transactions. Sally is replacing Natasha Primo, who has led the organisation for the past seven years. Natasha will be moving to the Association for Progressive Communications (APC), working with APC member organisations to help strengthen civil society capacity around national ICT policy advocacy in Africa, South East Asia, Latin America and South East Europe. Under Natasha?s leadership, Women?sNet has grown from strength to strength and established itself as an important role player in the national, regional and international ICT4D arena. Her commitment, energy and vision will always be remembered and valued. In particular, her ability to see the bigger picture and make connections within, between and across the ICT4D and gender sectors has resulted in a strategic but essential shift in the organisation?s area of focus. Her belief that feminists and women?s rights activists should engage outside of the ?gender sector? has helped reframe the terrain in which Women?sNet operates and underpins her move from the gender sector to the ICT4D sector. Natasha?s departure comes at a time when Women?sNet is reviewing the role it has played in women?s and feminist organising over the past decade and charting a way forward that responds to the challenging context in which women?s and feminist organisations operate. Her contribution to this process and to the development of the organisation over the last seven years has been invaluable. She will be missed. At the same time, we are delighted that Sally will be taking up the Executive Director position. Her experience and expertise in both the women?s rights and ICT4D sectors has great value for Womens?Net; and her involvement in the organisation for the last seven years means that the institutional memory and vision required to grow the organisation even further is retained. Sally?s dedication and passion to the vision of Women?sNet is clear. She says: ?ICTs certainly have the potential to change the world. However this requires proactive participation, interrogation and knowledgeable interventions by feminists and women?s rights activists to shape new innovations and to take advantage of existing software and hardware opportunities. Our increased participation has the potential to shape and define technologies (both software and hardware); content and regulation of the World Wide Web?. Congratulations to both Sally and Natasha! The CGF is due to make its decision in early November. The delegation was led by Davis MacIyalla, founder and leader of Changing Attitude in Nigeria, who has been on a tour of the United States and the UK as part of the listening process recommended by the Windsor report. ?Nigeria?s homophobic oppression is a violation of the Commonwealth Games ethos of equality, humanity, peace, unity, co-operation, and understanding,?
