08/06/2007 - Stigma hampers fight against HIV/AIDS in South Kivu
Irin News

In the volatile eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where people
are often more concerned about their safety than HIV/AIDS, widespread
stigma and discrimination are driving the epidemic underground, especially
in the province of South Kivu. "When my neighbours learnt that I was
positive, they made sure that I was thrown out of the rental house I was
living in with my wife and three children," said Borauzima Lukabia, 34, in
Bukavu, the provincial capital.

08/06/2007 - Government urged to act over sexual abuse of women
Irin News

Human rights activists and at least one government official are hopeful the
Ivorian leadership will take action on growing evidence that government and
rebel forces sexually abused hundreds - if not thousands - of women during
the conflict and continue to do so today.

08/06/2007 - Did you say cell phones for development? “Yes, technology
can do anything, really, but people have to drive it”
APC News

Considering the rapidly growing presence of cell phones in the developing
world, interest in their role for advancing development goals is only natural.
And, considering the demographic overlap between those most affected by
HIV/AIDS and cell phone users, it only makes sense that a major focus be
put on how this low-cost technology can fight this deadly pandemic. APC-
member Women’sNet recently engaged in a UNICEF-driven speed
assessment of fifteen projects that apply cell phones towards development
objectives in Africa, with a particular focus on HIV/AIDS prevention,
treatment and care.

08/06/2007 - Sex Trafficking Could Be Factor in South Asian HIV Epidemic
Feminist Majority Foundation
Sex trafficking of young women and girls in South Asia could be a significant
factor in outbreaks of HIV throughout the region, according to findings in a
Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) study. Nearly 40
percent of the Nepali women and girls examined in the study who were
trafficked into the Indian sex trade between January 1997 and December
2005 were HIV positive when they returned home.

08/06/2007 - Opening a new window on the Indian Ocean

08/06/2007 - The Book of South African Women
GWS Africa

Foreward:

There are many things I like about living in this new South Africa. And one of
the best is to see the changing face of leadership and influence. Apartheid
was an appalling system for many varied reasons. One of them was that its
vision of a leader in society was static and one dimensional. Come the new
Constitution and all that was changed. From the colour of the sitting of the
first rainbow Parliament (where women took their seats of power for the first
time) to the value we attach to being representative, this is a different society
with a diverse leadership.

08/06/2007 - Attention: All Women's or Gender Based Organisations!
Reproductive Rights Alliance

TERMINATION OF PREGNANCY AMMENDMENT ACT (CTOPA) No 38,
2004 is currently under discussion at the National Council of Provinces
(NCOP). The Amendment Act was the subject of a Constitutional court
challenge because wide public consultation did not happen at the provincial
level; the Amendment Act has therefore been referred back to the NCOP for
public consultation. The Amendment Act increases access to terminations
by decentralizing services, and adding nurses to the list of health
practitioners able to perform terminations. Submissions must be limited to
the Amendment Act, and not to the original Choice on Termination of
Pregnancy Act of 1996.

08/06/2007 - Kenya: Cyber Law Being Developed
All Africa

Kenya's cyber law, when enacted, could be adopted as a model law for other
countries within the East African Community (EAC) - Tanzania, Uganda,
Rwanda and Burundi - which are yet to enact such kind of legislation to give
regulatory direction for ICT-related transactions. Already, a process has
been initiated under the auspices of United States Agency for International
Development (USAID) Washington's Economic Growth Agriculture and
Trade/Information Technology and Energy (EGAT/IT&E) Bureau to guide
the process leading to the development of the legislation in Kenya.

08/06/2007 - SA to get free legal services this week
SAWLA

Ordinary South Africans with no funds to access legal service will get the
necessary help this week for free from hundreds of women lawyers
countrywide. This is part of the Access to Justice Week, which was unveiled
on Monday by the Justice Minister Brigitte Mabandla and representatives of
the South African Women Lawyers' Association (SAWLA).

08/06/2007 - Internet-based sex education to guide youngsters
Highway Africa News Agency

At the click of a button, youngsters who often grapple with the question of
sex issues will now get first-hand information regarding the topic, thanks to a
new innovative computer-based sexuality and HIV Aids education
programme dubbed the 'World Starts With Me'. The new programme is an
initiative of the Centre for the Study of Adolescence (CSA) whose epicentre
focuses on sexuality issues such as puberty, pregnancy, reproductive health
and HIV Aids. The program seeks to address many questions that trouble
the youth such as, "How do I get pregnant". "How can I protect myself
against HIV Aids". "What are Sexually Transmitted Diseases among", etc.
