Our Constitution, which we adopted in 1996, ensures that women and men have equal rights before the law. The rights of all women are upheld and protected by our government. This means that women of different religious, language, class and cultural backgrounds have the right to equal safety, security and protection from the police and the courts. It is sale day and the colours are paper beads the group has made to sell at a considerable profit to the organisation Bead for Life. In a country where women contribute 50% to the Gross Domestic Product and comprise 39% of owners of registered businesses, many enterprising women are still struggling to find their footing in the Ugandan economy. ..................................................................... 03/19/2007 - Petition for a 5th Women's World Conference Womenact We, the women of the world, clearly recognize the positive impact that the Beijing platform, the UNSC Resolution 1325 and other worldwide conferences have had on the lives of women. However, there is a great need to create the political will needed to fully implement and monitor past obligations to women and girls. This does not exclude the need to address newly emerging issues. This stock-taking happens all over the world, involving both women and men, and it reveals some progress. Sadly, it also suggests that we still have a long way to go. Women and young girls continue to lack sufficient access to health, education, and wealth, particularly in the poorest countries. Socially unjust disparities between women in rich and poor countries are an additional grim reminder of how much remains to be done. ..................................................................... 03/19/2007 - Zimbabwe: 'Govt Committed to Fighting HIV/Aids' All Africa Government will continue mitigation programmes for people infected or affected by the HIV and Aids pandemic, Mashonaland East Governor Cde Ray Kaukonde said last week. Now is the critical time for the human rights of women and girls to be addressed, affirmed, implemented, and never forgotten by the international community. ..................................................................... 03/19/2007 - The Fifth World Summit on the Media and Children Kicks off in South Africa Highway Africa News Agency The long awaited world summit on the media and children will kick-off in South Africa towards the end of March 2007 to map out strategies on the representation of children in the media. At the centre of the debate will be how children could be involved in the process of producing images and programs for themselves. ..................................................................... 03/19/2007 - Harnessing New Technologies to Enhance Women's Health All Africa The International Women's Day is a time when we take stock each year of the progress, or lack of it, on women's rights. Representative Janice D. Schakowsky (D-IL) and Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) introduced legislation (HR 1420 and SB 823) that would promote the development of microbicides, topical gels, creams, suppositories, films, and sponges, that may provide effective protection against the sexual transmission of HIV. During the first few years of the existence of the Institute, its main objective centred on the promotion of a generalised gender awareness in the African social research community. The Institute has subsequently been organised around specific themes designed to strengthen the use of gender as an analytic category that is integral both to the output of African social researchers and the emergence of a networked community of scholars versed in the field of Gender Studies. The theme that has been selected for the 2007 Institute is: African Female Elites. ***********************Calendar of Events***************************** To see all the listings for the calendar, go to: http://womensnet.org.za/calendar.shtml 04/21/2007 - 04/24/2007 Invitation to the Civil Society Rural Women's Tent Forum, Other, South Africa South African Civil Society The South African Civil Society, in partnership with the South African Government, have great pleasure in inviting you to the Rural Women?s Voices Tent Forum that will take place during the Fourth World Congress of Rural Women in Durban South Africa on 21 to 24 April, 2007. ..................................................................... 03/12/2007 - 03/12/2007 International NGO Conference: Prospects for Africa - Europe?s Policies, Conference, Germany VENRO in Cooperation with CONCORD Africa?s development is a focal aspect of Germany?s and also the subsequent EU Council Presidencies of Portugal and Slovenia and it is to play a prominent role at the informal meeting of development ministers on the Petersberg in Bonn on the 13th March 2007. Our Constitution, which we adopted in 1996, ensures that women and men have equal rights before the law. The rights of all women are upheld and protected by our government. This means that women of different religious, language, class and cultural backgrounds have the right to equal safety, security and protection from the police and the courts.
