Women?sNet on Facebook!
Facebook is a social networking website that connects people with others
who work, study and live around them. Women?sNet has created a group on
Facebook as a way of extending our activism. You can join the Women?sNet
group by following the link:
{http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=4900179138" }http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=4900179138
The Women?sNet Facebook group is a space where you can find more
information about Women?sNet and what we do; share photographs, and
also engage in interesting discussions about technology tools for social
action. Our first discussion is focusing on cell phones and how they can be
used as tools in efforts to end gender violence. We are asking:
?Where do you keep your phone? Do you have it on you always, or do you
leave it at home/turn it off at night? Do you consider it a matter of safety to
have it on you all the time?
Join the Women?sNet Facebook group now!

The Inner Circle

documenting the lives of several gay individuals in countries where being
homosexual and Muslim is more than just a taboo combination but a deadly

us through its literal Arabic meaning ?struggle?, as the characters we meet
take us on their personal strivings toward love. Encountering the inevitable
conflict with family, country and self coat tailed to this silent dilemma. Filmed
in secret and at great risk, we travel through India, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey to
Egypt, South Africa and France.

Women'sNet staffers, Jan, Elizabeth, Nicolle and Lerato conducted a digital
story telling workshop in Ingwavuma, northern Kwa-Zulu Natal last week.
Our trainees were from the Fancy Stitch project - an income generating
project supported by Oxfam Australia. http://www.fancy.org.za/ .
10 women were supposed to attend the training, but 26 women arrived ?
making that three participants per computer. The participants were all
cooperative, which made the training a pleasure to conduct even with limited
resources.
The result: 27 fabulous movies.
A special thank you to the participants and to all the staff at Fancy Stitch!

10/22/2007 - Global Women?s Sexual and Reproductive Health Remains
Poor
Feminist Majority Foundation
Twenty years after the launching of the World Health Organisation?s Safe
Motherhood Initiative, the sexual and reproductive health status of women
across the globe has remained relatively poor and "disturbingly static,"
Population Action International (PAI) reports. PAI, an independent policy
advocacy group, released a study this week of women in 130 countries,
analyzing nine reproductive health indicators that, combined, determine a
Reproductive Risk Index (RRI).

Seven years ago in October the United Nations passed Security Council

10/22/2007 - Indian Women Address Health Hazard
Feminist Majority Foundation
Agence France-Presse (AFP) recently reported that a Delhi-based nonprofit
is working with women in India to produce sanitary pads. Millions of Indian
women who cannot afford store-bought sanitary pads often rely on dirty
rags, strips of old clothes, or nothing at all while they?re menstruating,
putting their lives at risk, aid workers say.

10/22/2007 - New Gender at Work Monograph
Gender at Work
We are very happy to share with you a new Gender at Work publication,
Change is a Slow Dance edited by Michel Friedman and Shamim Meer. This
monograph integrates the reflections of three organisations that participated
in a fourteen month Action-Learning Programme facilitated by Gender at
Work in South Africa during 2004 and early 2005. The main objective of the
program was to catalyse and assist in facilitating a change process in these
social change and human rights based organisations to deepen their own
capacity for improving gender relationships and power inequalities both
internally and in their programmatic work.

10/22/2007 - Police to handle gay cases properly
Behind the Mask
While studies show that homosexual people in South Africa experience high
levels of victimisation because of their sexual orientation, Jabulani Police
Station?s Commissioner perceives it differently. The Soweto police station?s
head ? Tommy Mthombeni admits that gay people are not the only
vulnerable groups but also women and children are. Mthombeni said this in
a meeting with 07-07-07 Campaign, which was meant to hear from the gay
community about measures in which police could take to combat hate
crimes.

10/22/2007 - Microsoft licences get open source nod
Tectonic
In a surprising announcement the Open Source Initiative said it had
approved two of Microsoft's licences as being acceptable for licensing open
source software. While many within the open source community will view
this as tantamount to allowing a wolf into sheep's clothing, the OSI board
(which did not approve a less permissive third licence) appears to be happy
with these two.

Call for Abstracts - African Women and Economic Empowerment
Online | African Women and Economic Empowerment | Deadline: 30
October 2007
In 1929 women in southeast Nigeria mounted a war against the forces of
British colonial rule. The women targeted all the symbols of the new political
order - the homes and offices of colonial officialdom, as well as its
representatives. The "disturbances" and the demands made by the women
at the Commission of Inquiry set up by the colonial government to
investigate surprised the British. The women who testified before the
Commission consistently demanded that women be represented in the new
institutions which had been set up by the colonial government. More than 50
women lost their lives, but not one of the changes the women demanded
were put into effect. Although the women organised and carried out this war,
it did not stop colonial authorities and missionaries from continuing to insist
that in their communities African women were "no better than cattle and
sheep" and completely lacking in agency.
