Umlazi court has issued an order stating that the ban on pants in
T-section be removed. The accused were asked to apologise for trying to
enforce a ban on women wearing pants. Zandile Mpanza and The Commission on
Gender Equality describes the case as victory for women.

04/14/2008 - SA behind the times on HIV treatment

South Africa's insufficient public sector anti-HIV treatment has been
highlighted again with the release of expert guidelines on antiretroviral
therapy in the region. The guidelines recommend starting patients on
antiretrovirals (ARVs) earlier than government prescribes and HIV-positive
pregnant women regardless of health status.

04/14/2008 - DRC promotes new sexual violence law
MONUC

As part of women’s month, a one day workshop on the promotion of the new
sexual violence law in the DRC was held on 31 Monday March 2008 in
Kinshasa, under the aegis of the International NGO Network for Development
(RIOD). The workshop was organised by RIOD and other female NGO networks
to make women aware of their rights, so that they can fight the impunity
of those who commit acts of sexual violence.

SABC news

The role in which women can play in politics is still disregarded in most
parliaments across the world. This is one of the findings revealed by
Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in the survey conducted on equality in
politics. The findings reveal that women occupy fewer seats in parliament
than men.

The Association of Women Journalists (AJPF) organised a morning discussion
on the independence of women in the media, their assets, limits and way
forward in Kinshasa on 8 April 2008. AJPF members and a representative
attended the meeting from MONUC’s gender office. One of the AJPF's
programme priorities was in Information Technology in which female
journalists lack.

BBC

Women are discriminated against in almost every country around the world,
said a UN-commissioned report. It says that this is despite the fact that
185 UN member states pledged to outlaw laws favoring men by 2005. The
report adds that 70% of the world’s poor are women and they own just 1% of
the world’s titled land. It further states that in 53 nations rape within
marriages has still not been made a crime.
