The SADC Protocol on Gender and Development has been adopted at SADC
Heads of State Summit on Sunday (see more on the news item below)
Importantly for our work, Article 31 addresses Universal access to
information and communication technologies (ICTS) and states "State
Parties shall put in place information and communication technology
policies and laws in the social, economic and political development
arena for women’s empowerment, regardless of race, age, religion, or
class. These policies and laws shall include specific targets developed
through an open and participatory process, in order to ensure women’s
and girl’s access to information and communication technology." We hope
to see advances in universal access in the SADC region, and in
particular, efforts that address the gender digital divide, and advances
in using ICTs to meet the real needs of women and girls. We congratulate
the SADC Protocol Alliance for their lobbying efforts!
